Intellectual Property Office Scam

Stirling and Clackmannanshire Council’s Trading Standards Service, is warning local businesses to be aware of a scam targeting patent and trade mark owners.

A company based in Latvia (but using a ‘virtual’ office address in London) is calling itself ‘Intellectual Property Office’.

Local businesses may receive a document through the post, which looks like an official reminder for their patent or trade mark.

The letter will invite them to pay renewal fees.

Trading Standards warn that this company has no connection with the Government’s Intellectual Property Office.

You do not have to pay any money to this private company.

There are several other companies soliciting business as renewal agents using trading names and/or methods which resemble those used by the Government’s Intellectual Property Office. These companies charge much higher fees than the official renewal fees.

The Advertising Standards Authority ruled that communications sent through the post by PATENT AND TRADEMARK AGENCY and TRADEMARK RENEWAL SERVICE are misleading.

Trading Standards advise that The Government’s Intellectual Property Office issues official renewal reminders when a patent or trade mark is due for renewal.

Mr John Alty, Chief Executive, Intellectual Property Office advises that for traders seeking to renew their trade mark or patent, the best way to do this are:

  • “Use a reputable renewal agent, such as Computer Patent Annuities Ltd or contact a registered trade mark or patent attorney”.
